Great Questions Regarding Premium Listing Definition

David asks…

with premium bonds what’s the definition of bond ‘value’ and holding?

and whats the difference?

on the winners list for example someone has a bond value of £50, but a holding of £495?
hi
no this is not the case.

the person who had a bond value of £50 and a holding of 495 won £100,000

http://www.nsandi.com/products/pb/winnerlist.jsp

have a look at the link for this months winners list i cant make out what the bond value represents.

Larry McCann answers:

If you buy 100 bonds for £100 i.e. 100 numbers (000001 to 000100) and one wins a £50 prize re-invested (500001 to 500050) then you will have a holding of £150 ,of two bond values of £100 and £50. So the bond value is the sequence of consecutive numbers held ,when totalled gives your holding.

Larry McCann answers:

I would personally buy the Toshiba 17.3″ AMD ATHLON II P340 Laptop out of all of these choices but a would also recommend that you buy a Gateway. They are great for low graphic gaming and can easily play Wow with high graphic settings. The NV series is becoming poplar now.

New netbook! Which of these dumb programs (bloatware, blah) can/should be removed?

I don’t even know what most of these are! A list of what to keep might be shorter. Please don’t tell me to delete anything that will mess up the cloud backup, my ability to get on the internet, my webcam, the special keys, yada yada.

Sandra asks…

how much can i sell my old laptop for?

what would get me the most, but not be too high to scare anyone off.

its an HP

120 GB hardrive
Windows XP Media Center Edition, Vista premium ready

Only problem is the power jack needs to be fixed ( $120-180) and the battery is also weak and a few of the keys stick and stuff.

How much should I list it for?
thanks!

Larry McCann answers:

Since it needs fixes, sell it $100 less than you got it. What year is it? If it’s older than 5 years, you might not even be able to sell it. People don’t like old computers. :)

Nancy asks…

Steam games won’t launch?

I’ve had Steam for a while and none of my games will launch. I only have two games, TF2 and L4D2. I can’t get either of them to work, and even downloaded other game demos to figure out if it was Valve, and those demos didn’t work either. I found a work-around for L4D2 (copying the exe from the Steam folder to the desktop) But it seems TF2 needs to be launched from Steam, so any methods you could list would be appreciated.

Specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel(R) HD Graphics (Core i3)
Realtek High Definition Audio
6144MB RAM
DirectX 11
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU
System Manufacturer: Gateway
Model #: DX4831

Let me know if I forgot anything.
This is a new install of steam.
Things I’ve tried:
Un-installing and re-installing steam.
Un-installing and re-installing my games.
Deleting the .blob file
Allowing it full access to my computer
Defragmenting everything
Verifying the integrity of my game cache

It’s probably a problem with steam, since I can still play L4D2 perfectly without using steam, but I need a fix so I can play TF2.

Larry McCann answers:

Did you recently upgrade to Win7, or was this a new install?

Have you deleted local content, and reinstalled?

[EDIT: "I tried all that gibbedy jab."

Then you need to ask on the Steam forums. Apparently its i really easy to trip up their installer...

Great Questions Regarding Premium Listing

Steven asks…

Do i get my money back from ebay for premium listing too if it duznt sell?

Larry McCann answers:

You have to relist it.

If you sell it after you relist it, then the original auction that did not sell will get refunded. Other than that, you do not get a refund…its just part of ebay fees.

You should just relist and make sure you make the price range low enough to sell it. Then you will get a refund for the previous auction that did not sell for the same item.

Go back to http://www.ebay.com and login to your account. Go to My EBAY and you will see the listing of yours that did not sell. There is an option to RELIST. After you click on RELIST, you should see a lot of stuff to read on screen. Look on the bottom where it says:

eBay charges a listing fee when you relist your item. If your item did not sell the first time around, and it sells when you list it a second time, we will automatically refund the relisting fee (conditions apply, review our relist policy for details).

Great Questions Regarding Premium Listing House

Lisa asks…

Can insurance on a house be in someone elses name along with yours to make premium cheaper??

Me & my husband are buying a house and found out today that if you have a bankruptcy that this affects you premium costs. So, I was wondering if my dad could put the insurance in his name and list me & my husband as well but use his name for the credit check, etc. Im not sure if it has to be the same as the deed or what? The difference is astronomical in premiums. One insurance today quoted us $1471.00 per year.

Larry McCann answers:

No. The person has to have an ownership interest in the property — in other words, you can’t insure what you don’t own. I’m sorry that it was necessary for you to declare bankruptcy, but this is one of the unpleasant consequences consequences.

Linda asks…

what do you look for in house cleaning services?

My family and I are in financial mess, and someone had suggested that my husband and I look into cleaning houses. I used to tag along with a family friend who was a professional house keeper, (when I was much younger) but it’s hard remembering what it was people were looking for. I’ve thought about creating packages (basic, premium, deep, etc) with a list of addons (clean refrigerator, sweep porches, clean windows, etc) as well as offering a custom package at an hourly rate. I’m not sure about what rates are nowadays, but I hear the average is around $20/hr. Since my husband and I haven’t done anything like this, we don’t have references… how much should our hourly rate be considering? What are things your house keeper does that you appreciate? Thanks in advance!

Larry McCann answers:

1.Be Bonded
2.Clean under things(people hide things(money) to make sure you clean there)
3.Use your own cleaning supplies
4.Empty and take out garbage
5.Don’t leave foot prints on carpet after vacuuming, vacuum in one direction(lines)
6.Wipe walls by light switches and obvious marks
7.Never reorganize any papers,mail,etc…
8.Don’t use phone(except in emergency) or i-pods(etc…) looks unprofessional

Davide your work into two categories
Wet work….
Kitchen;always start at the top.Wipe the cupboards,light fixtures,etc…
Clean the refrigerator,counters,stove,microwave,sink,etc…
Empty the garbage
Sweep and mop the floors
Bathroom;spray the tub and surround, sink and toilet.clean the mirror and wall switch plate.
Wipe the counter, sink.Scrub the tub and surround.(make sure to shine all the faucets)
Scrub the toilet in and out.
Sweep and mop the floor.
Do anything else needed(rehang the towels etc…to make it look nice)

Dry work
Living room/Dinning room,bed rooms
Dust(move stuff),,wipe walls where needed, organize the best you can any mess(clothes/toys),make beds, clean any mirrors, dust nic nacs, light fixtures, clean under furniture(people hide money and little things to make sure you cleaned there, put in a pile close to where you found it).Vacuum in one direction(lines) as you leave the room(leave no foot prints).

Always use separate rags for wet/dry work.Cloth baby diapers are the best thing to use, they leave no lint, easy to keep clean and last a long time.

Do your best not to talk to people while working, try to just get in and out.A lot of time people will be home while you work, always be pleasant but concentrate on getting your work done thoroughly in as short time as you can.

You can do one cleaning(wet or dry) while your husband does the other.Work will get done faster this way)

Helen asks…

If I file “Married Filing Separately”, but house is in both of our names, which one claims it?

I usually file “Married Filing Jointly” but we had too little taxes taken out and we owe the IRS $385. I was wondering if it would be to our advantage to file separately but I wasn’t sure about the house. It is listed in both of our names so who claims the interest and property taxes? Or do we divide the interest and taxes in the middle and I claim half and so does he? We have no children and no other deduction to really take. I can deduct some for prescriptions ($600 for the year) and $600 for charitable contributions. My husband has none. We can’t claim insurance premiums b/c it is provided at our jobs. Can we file seperately and I claim the medical and charity deductions and he claims the house or can we not do that at all and we have to take the standard deduction? I think if we file separately one of us will still have to pay and the other will get a refund, but it still will be less than if we filed jointly. Ideas?

Larry McCann answers:

Generally, you would be worse off doing married filing separately. If you owe $385 going MFJ, I would be willing to bet that you will owe more if you file MFS. Since the 1098 for the mortgage interest is sent using just one SSN, the general rule is that the person whose SSN is on the form is the one claiming it. If both of you are contributing towards the mortgage payment, then you can split the mortgage interest (how you split it is up to you) and you would need to attach a statement to both returns showing the split. Also, on an ongoing basis, you would need to use the same split percentage.

Steven asks…

Counter offer 1: $1, 190,000, then Counter offer 2: $1,197,000 – what?

I am negotiating to buy an house listed at $1,199,000. My first offer: $1, 182, 000. The seller responds with: $1, 190,000. I say there is difference of $8000, so I split the difference and respond with $1, 186, 000. Now I get an counter-offer from seller of $1, 197,000 ($7 K more than earlier counter). According to my agent, apparently, they have somebody else who also wrote-up an offer after our counter of $1, 186, 000. Unclear what is the price of the offer, but it seems they might countering to both potential buyers with higher price to bid-up the price. BTW, my offer is contingent upon sale of my house (currently under contract, all contingencies removed, waiting for close of escrow). And it seems the other offer is non-contingent and the listing agent wants us to pay “premium” for contingency.

On scale of 1-10, I probably need the house at 7. What will be the best response?
Shall I withdraw my offer and wait for other offer to fall through? Shall I get in the bidding war? Shall we call the listing agent to probe her with questions to get a clearer picture?

Any expert advice appreciated.

Larry McCann answers:

Instruct your agent to ask the other agent if the seller is considering any other offers, and then bottom line – what would the seller accept to get the deal done (so long as you’re comfortable with where the price is now).

Ruth asks…

no one will insure this foreclosed on house that is occupied so why and what to do?

loooong story.
I want to bid on a foreclosed on home. The occupant is the previous owner. The auction is April 5th and 5% down would have to be paid and the rest within 20 days and until closing, Wells Fargo has the house insured. I need vandalism and fire by vandalism from the date I would own it until the occupant is out. The lawyer who did the updated title search for me said do not bid if you are worried about vandalism, and a real estate agent who tried to talk to the occupant to get me in there through a short sale to stop the auction was unsucessful in talking to the occupant because the occupant is in denial about her inability to keep the home and the result of next week’s auction. This agent said let the bank buy it at the auction and then when they list it with an MSL, then go for it. The tax value is $65,200 and the debt owed Wells Fargo is $38,654. No one knows how the bidding will go but if the bank gets it for $38654, I doubt it is listed later under $55,000 which leaves me out. The idea of getting it for $39,000 through the auction or less than that through a short sale are compelling. The problem is no one will insure my cost to buy the house which will be $38,654, maybe a little higher, all dependent on the bank’s opening bid and their final bid, and who else is interested in this house.
I knew Foremost wrote some specialty policies so I called them. They told me the names of two independent agents. I went to the first one and got a dwelling fire one/basics one, protection class 9, occupancy: vacant for $2695 a year. I need coverage for maybe 3 weeks.
It was insured for $70,000. I asked what does the policy pay me on a $10,000 loss and they said $10,000. I asked what does the policy pay on a total loss and they said $70,000. I went on to the 2nd agent to compare quotes. Also, I noticed on the $70,000 policy it said “vacant” when they were specifically told the house will be occupied by the previous owner. On to the 2nd agent and they called Foremost. Foremost said the $70,000 policy would not have paid a penny on fire and vandalism which is what I needed. If I had taken that policy and had a claim denied I would have had to sue the agency that gave me a worthless policy. The 2nd agent, over a period of 30 minutes after I left, called me and said “Foremost, American Modern and American Reliable don’t have a policy for you”. I went to a pay phone and called Foremost directly. Their application process was long and many questions. I can not inspect the property so there were some questions I could not answer. Such as existence of a space heater or a smoke alarm. The pay phone timed out after 12 minutes and this happened 3 times. However, I was able to talk to the same agent on all 3 calls. On the 2nd call they said their underwriters would do the policy. On the 3rd call they said no. All because I could not give an accurate answer on smoke alarm or space heater.
So, I had a DP1 “tenant” protection class C quote from another agent through Scottsdale. They were insuring my cost to buy the home which would be around $40,000 knowing I would not rebuild if a total loss, and everyone knew $40,000 would not rebuild any way. The premium was only $39 a month, almost hard to believe. I later went back and inquired more about this policy and the phone person-agent who gave me the quote got a little huffy puffy because I was questioning the quote. She again said it covered vandalism and fire. So, I go to another independent agent and say I heard Scottsdale might have a policy for my situation. They worked with several other companies. After the agent took all my info and talked to the staff today he called and said he could not insure it as there were too many unknowns. I told him what I had heard that an occupant, whether a rent paying tenant, or a non rent paying relative, or me offering free housing for the homeless, whatever, an occupant of any kind would be a “tenant” policy. As I was thinking about it, will my occupant be more likely to damage the place than a paying tenant that has to be evicted? It seems to me, not much more likely. Any occupant who is not the owner could have to be evicted and could do vandalism.
So, I went to an adjacent town and went to the same agency that had quoted me the $40,000 policy through Scottsdale. Not the same agent but the same agency just a different location. I went in there saying I heard Scottsdale might be the company to help me. I knew this because of the previous quote through Scottsdale. This agent said he was not comfortable writing the policy. He said he wanted to write it as a vacant, despite there being an occupant. I think he said it was because the occupant did not have a lease with me, so he suggested a flat policy and labelled as vacant. I asked well, if there is claim for damage caused by the occupant, will a vacant policy pay the claim? I got a shaky answer. Then I said, what is Scottsdales definition of a “tenant”? He did not know. They I s
my state does have FAIR plan

Larry McCann answers:

Not sure what your question is. The definition of tenant, is someone who lives in the home, but doesn’t own it.

You won’t get this house for $39K. The bank will bid the loan balance, PLUS the auction fees – the bank will probably own this for $45K. You’ll have to outbid them.

You cannot buy insurance without being able to answer the questions on the application.

And you can ask your agent to try the state fair plan.

But I think this deal is NOT a good idea for you- because you flat out can’t afford to go without your money for six months, if it takes that long to get the claim adjusted.

When you own a home, you flat out take some risks. When you buy a foreclosure, you naturally have a lot MORE risk. You can’t transfer all that.

Don’t buy a home with a hostile tenant in it.

Great Questions Regarding Affiliate Marketing Blog

Carol asks…

What should a affiliate marketing be, a blog or website?

I want to make a content based website. I want to make it a affiliate based website. Should I choose a place like wordpress or make it a regular website.

Thanks for your help

Larry McCann answers:

For affiliate marketing both blog and WordPress are good.

But recommended is a WordPress blog as almost all the functionality that a sit can have, can be achieved in WordPress blog. Look of the homepage can be made like a site by making static homepage.

Using WordPress for this has manifold advantages as a lot of automation can be made in WordPress blog. Almost no maintenance or tech issues, further features of wordpress blog can be customized for a novoice user to a very tech-savy.

But it is recommended to have idea of self hosted blog Vs wordpress.com which is at http://reena.in/self-hosted-blog-vs-hosting-on-wordpress-dot-com/

Lizzie asks…

Asking about affiliate marketing with my blog…?

Okay…I had already asked a question a few days before about why my blog doesn’t come up when I used the Google search engine, even though I have entered my website’s whole address (copy pasted) into the search box…

I reviewed the answers, and I found out that my website actually does come up inside of Google…

And now, to be totally honest…I’m actually using my blog for affiliate marketing for a certain website…and I think I get the drill on how to use the blog for it…my only problem is…I can’t seem to make my website to show inside the normal Google search engine (you know, the www.google.com place…) cause that’s the place where people search for things, right?

Can anybody help me on this? Oh yeah, I had already aired the website since late October…

Larry McCann answers:

Hi buddy!

Well, appearing on the first page of search results especially on Google is an interesting approach. It may seem too complicated, but after you learn some basics, it will get much easier.

The process of making web pages shown on the search engines is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and is a step-by-step process. Do it properly and you will come up on the first page very soon!

First of all, you need to choose a main keyword which is related to your website topic. A keyword that is not too broad and general, is searched accross the Internet many times and has very low competition. Some keyword research tools may give you the needed datas. That´s why it is recommended to select your keywords before you build your web pages.

Then, put that main keyword on some parts of your website. This is called On-Page Optimization. Put it on your domain name or sub domain name, put it on your Title tag, add it to your meta tags (Keywords and Description). Put it on your web page in some important places such as Headings, first and last paragraphs, as bold and italic fonts, and of course in your text. But don´t EVER try to use those keywords aggressively in your content. It will harm your SEO efforts and Search Engines will find it out and ban you instantly. NEVER try to abuse the system or spam!

Now, it is time to get backlins to your website (Off-Page Optimization). Try to choose websites that are related to your topic and have high PageRank. You should have your site published on other websites as anchor text. Meaning that your link on other sites may look like as a text including your main keywords instead of a link.

The more web pages link to your site, the higher positions your site will get according to that keyword. But, like I said before, the first step is to research and find the best related keywords to your site´s topic. You may find some datas on free keyword tools such as Overture and Google Keyword Tool, but I would prefer to use some paid tools that give me a lot of data about my site topic.

Mark asks…

New at affiliate marketing. Which blog or site builder should I use.?

I need a easy to use site builder.
I will be using Amazon & Ebay links. Any help??

Larry McCann answers:

Hey Tommy!

It rather depends on your personal level of technical skill here. The top three options that come to mind would be …

1) Blogger.com — Very easy to use. Just set-up a free account and start bloggin’! The downside to this option would be the lack of control you have over your site. You can’t add scripts or much in the way of customization. Plus, they could decide to cancel you at any time without warning.

2) WordPress — With this option you would register your own domain name and buy your own hosting and then you’re free to do pretty much anything your heart desires! It requires a little bit of technical knowledge but not as much as building everything from scratch. This is probably your best bet.

3) SiteSell — This can be a little costly (about $300?) but they provide absolutely every tool you could ever want all in one package. Vast amount of online help available and forums filled with people willing to help you. Good newbie package. Many successful affiliate marketers started here.

My best advice is to pick one and stick with it until you start making your first dollars online. You can expand from there.

–JR Rich

John asks…

How do I do Affiliate Marketing? Which Companies? Or, on my own Blog?

How do I get started with Affiliate Marketing? There are companies? Which ones do I sign up with? And do I need to have my own website or Blog to do this? Please help me understand.

Thank You,
Kaloni

Larry McCann answers:

Start reading a bit and learning on how affiliate marketing works.

You don’t need your own website or blog. You can do direct linking from AdWords or article marketing.

Start with Clickbank and Commission Junction. Then, when you’re comfortable look at other affiliate networks.

If you want to learn how to build your own websites:

Sharon asks…

Affiliate Product Marketing, choose product first or niche???

When setting up an affiliate marketing blog should I choose a product from the Affiliate list first or should i think of my niche then try to find the affiliate product??? thanks on any help you can give.

Larry McCann answers:

Choosing a niche first would give you a headstart.
Choose a niche with low competition and good demand and
then choose the top selling product in that niche.

Sandy asks…

When promoting an affiliate product through article marketing…?

…should one put a link in the “article resource box” to one’s affiliate-marketing blog for that product, or directly to the vendor’s sales page?

Larry McCann answers:

Hi John,

You could certainly do either of those but normally I’d recommend linking to your own site as you have much more control over it.

Firstly, many people sending people straight to the vendor will include an ugly looking affiliate url in the bio box. This then shouts ‘affiliate link’ and so many people will not click it just for that reason. You could of course use a redirect script to get around that problem.

Secondly, sending a visitor straight to the vendor means you lose any chance of collecting the visitors information so you can promote to them again in the future whereas sending them to your own site or even directly to your own squeeze page gives you this chance.

Jenny asks…

How can you do affiliate marketing without an website?

I am interested in doing affiliate marketing but i dont want to create a website or blog, then how i can i do it?ONLY SERIOUS GENUINE ANS.

Larry McCann answers:

I used to screw around with clickbank but it seemed like i was spinning my wheels and spending way more money then came in. I switched to http://totallyfreedatingwebsite.com ‘s affiliate program. It pays $35 to $55 per sign up. The people don’t even need to buy anything. And the best part is that it converts like crazy. It goes to show you how many horny guys there are out there. Anyways….I hope that helps.

PS: Scroll to the bottom of the page to and click on “webmasters”

Great Questions Regarding 7 Figure Success Formula

Lisa asks…

Dice Probability Question?

Ok I am wondering what the formula would be to figure out this probability question. I play a role playing game called World of Darkness which uses 10 sided dice. You get a success on a 8, 9, or 10 and you roll 10′s again. Now I want to know what the formula would be to figure out what is the probability of getting say 3 successes on 5 dice, just to give an example. I was able to calculate 1 success on x dice with the formula 1-(7/10)^#ofDice but I am at a loss above 1 success.
M3: Good answer but does it handle the re roll 10′s part, because I am not seeing it.

Larry McCann answers:

This is what is called a binomial distribution
n = number of “trials” = 5
p = probability of “success” in a single trial = 0.3
q = 1 – p = probability of “failure” in a single trial = 0.7

the formula for k successes in n trials is

P[k] = nCk*p^k*q^(n-k)

so P[3] = 5C3*0.3^3*0.7^2
= 0.1323 or 13.23%

Mandy asks…

Statistics Problem?

I am in 10th grade taking AP statistics, and our teacher was gone today but still assigned homework which i cannot figure out what formula and whatnot to use.

Ray is a basketball player who has made about 70% of his free throws over several years. In a tournament game he makes only 2 of 6 free throws. Ray’s coach says this was just bad luck. Suppose that Ray’s free throws are independent trials with prob. 0.7 of a success on each trial. What is the prob. that he makes 2 or fewer in 6 attempts? Do you think that his tournament performance is just chance variation?

Whoever explains to me what to do will get best answer. Our teacher really does not teach at all so I just have to figure it out. The rest of the problems are similar so this one would be good to know.

Larry McCann answers:

Let X be the number of free throws Ray makes. X has the binomial distribution with n = 6 trials and success probability p = 0.7

In general, if X has the binomial distribution with n trials and a success probability of p then
P[X = x] = n!/(x!(n-x)!) * p^x * (1-p)^(n-x)
for values of x = 0, 1, 2, …, n
P[X = x] = 0 for any other value of x.

The probability mass function is derived by looking at the number of combination of x objects chosen from n objects and then a total of x success and n – x failures.
Or, in other words, the binomial is the sum of n independent and identically distributed Bernoulli trials.

X ~ Binomial( n , p )

the mean of the binomial distribution is n * p = 4.2
the variance of the binomial distribution is n * p * (1 – p) = 1.26
the standard deviation is the square root of the variance = ? ( n * p * (1 – p)) = 1.122497

The Probability Mass Function, PMF,
f(X) = P(X = x) is:

P( X = 0 ) = 0.000729
P( X = 1 ) = 0.010206
P( X = 2 ) = 0.059535
P( X = 3 ) = 0.18522
P( X = 4 ) = 0.324135
P( X = 5 ) = 0.302526
P( X = 6 ) = 0.117649

The Cumulative Distribution Function, CDF,
F(X) = P(X ? X) is:

x
? P(X = t) =
t = 0

P( X ? 0 ) = 0.000729
P( X ? 1 ) = 0.010935
P( X ? 2 ) = 0.07047
P( X ? 3 ) = 0.25569
P( X ? 4 ) = 0.579825
P( X ? 5 ) = 0.882351
P( X ? 6 ) = 1

We know that the probability he makes two or fewer free throws is the assumptions are true is only 7.047% I would say this right on the edge of chance variation. If he were to play 100 games like this in only 7 of them would you expect him to make two or fewer of six free throws. This was just a bad day for Ray.

John asks…

A realtor receives a commission of $1O,120 for selling a house. What is the selling price?

Real Estate commission. The following is a typical real estate commission on the selling price of a house:
7% for the first $100,000 and 4% for the amount that exceeds $100,000. A realtor receives a commission of $10,120 for selling a house. What was the selling price?
I am not just looking for an answer here, I would like an explanation as how to figure out a math word problem like this. I know the answer is $178,000 but I’m not sure of the steps or formula to use to get there. I have struggled to do this problem a few ways, with no success, any help or suggestions?

Larry McCann answers:

First make a note of the things you know and the things you don’t know:

You know that it’s a fixed 7% of 100,000
You know that the total commission is 10,120
What you need to know is the amount over 100,000 that the 4% commission is applied to so call that amount x.

Start writing down these things in a equation:

Total Commission = 7% of 100,000 + 4% of the amount over 100,000

Restated with numbers and variables:

10,120 = 7% * 100,000 + 4% * x

10,120 = .07 * 100,000 + .04x

10,120 = 7000 + .04x

10,120 – 7000 = .04x

3120 = .04x

3120/.04 = x

78,000 = x

Remember that x is the amount over 100000 so you have to add that to the 78,000 to get 178,000.

i have a business assignment where i have to choose an article and summarize it in my own words? can someone summarize the article for me? pleaseeeee:)

These are tough days for box-office wizards, prophets and know-it-alls.

Their crystal balls have gone cloudy in the weekly game of predicting which movie will top the charts in the U.S. and Canada, the domestic market as the industry calls it.

Last weekend, the superhero satire Kick-Ass was supposed to live up to its title, earning at least $30 million (U.S.) in its opening frame. Instead, it reaped $19.8 million, barely enough to claim the No. 1 spot ahead of the family film How to Train Your Dragon, which is still breathing fire after more than three weeks of release.

Kick-Ass has been deemed a “disappointment” by industry pundits, as indeed was How to Train Your Dragon earlier this month, when it failed to earn as much as expected in its opening bow. Yet Dragon has now earned $158 million and counting, which makes it a profitable slow-burner, as Kick-Ass may yet prove to be.

Ditto for the romantic comedy Date Night, another “disappointment” that opened merely okay but is more than just a one-night stand. Guessing the box-office stats is like playing the ponies or betting on Stanley Cup finalists.

“I think sometimes that the expectations are wrong,” said Peter Bart, columnist and editorial director for trade mag Variety, who wrote a book titled The Gross about box-office figures.

“For example, people said that Date Night didn’t open well. But it did, doing about $50 million the first couple of weeks. What I think is happening is that people are so used to these spectacular numbers from ‘tent pole’ pictures that they don’t realize that some of these other films are doing pretty well. Kick-Ass had a budget of only $28 million, and it could certainly pass $100 million worldwide. I think that’s pretty good for a picture of that class.”

Gitesh Pandya, the editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com, agrees with Bart that expectations are the main thing out of whack in box-office results.

“Overall, I am seeing less of the big flops these days,” he said via email.

“I think studios have cut back on their slates and so we are seeing a higher percentage of sure things and surprise hits. We don’t see a Land of the Lost (a huge 2009 bomb) every month anymore. Instead, last year we saw surprise hits kick in over $1 billion to the box office, helping the year break $10 billion for the first time. These included The Blind Side, The Hangover, District 9, Taken and Paranormal Activity.”

Bart and Pandya make excellent points. It does seem to me, though, that there are fewer surefire hits than ever. The star-driven Green Zone and Repo Men both flopped recently. The comedies Death at a Funeral and She’s Out of My League were far from bell-ringers. And the situation for small independent and foreign films is so dire, with so many producers and distributors forced out of the game by bad economics, that even an optimist like Bart calls it a “radical” decline.

On the other hand, you have a movie like Avatar, which has exceeded even the most wild-eyed hopes of its creator James Cameron, with a $2.7 billion take (and counting) that has made it the most successful film in history. Avatar dethroned Cameron’s previous record-setter, Titanic, which earned more than $1.8 billion.

In fact, a dispassionate assessment of Cameron’s moviemaking career since he entered the majors in the early 1980s shows he’s never had a real flop: True Lies, Aliens and Terminators 1 and 2 have all been major hits. The only “disappointment” would be 1989’s The Abyss, which did merely okay, but that has grown in stature as a cult favorite over the years.

If anyone would know how to make a sure-fire smash, it would be Cameron. When I spoke to him this week about Thursday’s Avatar DVD release, I asked him what his magic formula for success is.

“I don’t think there’s a formula, because the films are all different,” he replied.

“But I think there’s a philosophy, and the philosophy is don’t talk down to the audience. Include them. Give them plenty of visual excitement. Play against their expectations. And include them in the emotional response to the movie. These sound very abstract, but it’s the only connective tissue I can find between these very disparate projects.”

He said he’s actually been thinking a lot about this topic, since Avatar took away Titanic’s box-office crown earlier this year. He elaborated on what it takes to make a movie click with an audience.

“I think it’s about creating characters that the audience can relate to, being very clear about what your intentions are, not being too mysterious or too aloof or too above the audience — too hip, if you will. You also have to include the audience in the emotional responses to the film, and making sure that the film fires on all cylinders between visual, character, narrative, surprise and emotional payo
