Excellent Information About Web Traffic Ideas

Jenny asks…

Can you give me advice/feedback on this concept?

I would like to make a simple website that will provide money for a certain non-profit from ad revenue. This would require lots of visitors monthly.

Right now, my idea to generate traffic is make a simple site where users would take a picture of them smiling on the homepage using a webcam. There would be facts about smiles and how it can instantly change your attitude etc. Then users can rank others smiles and the top smiles would appear on the homepage. I would call it smilesforchange.

I have many years of experience developing web applications. If done right, could this work? If not, what could be a better idea along these lines: A simple website/web application where users help make the world a better place with little effort. The main goal is to get the most traffic possible to generate revenue from ads.

Larry McCann answers:

The only thing I see wrong with this WONDERFUL concept is the potential for it to be abused. Without the proper moderation, it’s quite possible that someone could log onto smilesforchange.com to find pictures of d*cks staring them in the face. I assume there will be some sort of filtering system

I also feel like there wouldn’t be too many repeat visitors. I would definitely go to that website, but again and again? Smiles are smiles…that might be a good component to incorporate into a larger feel-good website.

Also, when people see something called “for change”, they expect it to do more than make internet users happy. Would some ad revenue go to, say, third-world country dentistry? Maybe you make a donation along with your smile, highest donation gets top billing on the page?

Again, this is a great concept, but the potential for misuse, the fact that the site’s really a one-trick pony, and the charity concept are all issues that need to be addressed. As I said, this may have more potential as one component of a general feel-good site.

Paul asks…

Why is my website getting ZERO hits?

I have created a website about pc tablets and looking to see if you guys can give me some suggestions on how to improve it.

I dont have the best web design skills but i am pretty happy with what i have acomplished here. Its a website that i am looking to update about once a week.

The website has been up a few months now and i have had literally no hits… Hardly anything! (nothing worth noting thats for sure). I was wondering if this is down to mistakes i have made or is it simply that my content is uninteresting. I still have a few things to do (some text is still missing / needs editing) but i am getting there!

Just need ideas on how to build traffic.

Anyway…. Any help would be appreciated

Larry McCann answers:

At first glance it looks visually very good. But a quick check on Nibbler http://nibbler.silktide.com/reports/www.pctabletpc.co.uk suggests that the linking is not good. That the site uses semantic HTML and that the code is not W3C compliant (some browsers will not be able to display correctly).
I know not everyone likes Nibbler but I think it gives a good idea of any weak areas. I am no expert on coding but I do know that this is most important for SEO. If you are just doing this for fun and to learn web design etc. Then fair enough. But if your main aim is to get visitors and make money from the site then either learn more or get the site professionally done.

George asks…

What online business idea should I choose?

I really want to make six or more figures online. I have a few online business ideas but I am not sure if you think any of the ideas are profitable and could make me six or more figures a year? The online business ideas are….

Idea 1. The first idea is a website where I sell office chairs. I would get the office chairs from a dropshipper and drop ship the chairs, or I would get them from a wholesale company and ship them myself. Since many home businesses are starting, more people are buying office furniture for their home business. Office furniture is a billion dollar industry. I heard of a kid named Sean Belnick who grosses 24 million dollars a year from selling office chairs online. I know there is some competition in this industry, but not too much. Do you think this online business idea could make me six or more figures a year?

Idea 2. The second online business idea is a website on songwriting. The website would contain a ton of content through articles, how-to’s, and reviews on the topic of songwriting since I have a lot of knowledge about the topic. Once I get traffic, I would ad some ads, google adsense, and relevant affiliate products on my site to monetize. Do you think this online business idea could make me six or more figures a year?

Idea 3. This idea is cool, but since there are already sites that do this, it could be challenging. The third idea is a website where users can buy, trade, and sell gift cards for money. I would make profit by charging the seller a small fee if their gift card makes a successfull sale. Do you think this online business idea could make me six or more figures a year?

Idea 4. I like this idea a lot. The last idea is a website where users who sign up for free can submit their origninal songs (that they must have rights to). Other users can listen, rate, comment, and share songs with friends. Submitted songs can be entered into the top 10 list by having the most hits and best rates. Users can also friend eachother and chat in a chat room. Say a user submits a new song, he can choose the option to have all of his friends notified about the song. So basically the site is an online community where users can listen to new music, share, comment, post original songs for feedback, and communicate with other members. The site would be free to use, but I would make money from ads. I am getting a quote from a web design firm right now, but I would probably be paying 5-10k for this site to get up and running. Do you think this online business idea could make me six or more figures a year?

Out of all the ideas, I think Idea 1 is the most profitable since I would be making $100 dollar profit per chair, but I want to hear what you think. Do you think any of these online business ideas could make me six or more figures a year?

What is your first sense when you meet some program that promise you to give money just for joining with no other efforts? “It is too good to be true” – is that? In prevalence it IS too good to be true.
The Internet is overload with all kinds of on-line business stuff. There are many usable programs either. But as far as I know by experience there aren’t way to earn money without investing your efforts. Firstly you must learn a lot to succeed in that field. Secondly you must implement what you learn. Without these main things every program that you join will seem scam.

Donna asks…

I want Yahoo to pay me for my idea.?

I have an idea for a feature that Yahoo could add to its home page; a button that would go along the left hand side over by “Answers”, “Autos”, etc.

It would generate a LOT of web hits for Yahoo, so, theoretically, it should make them money. How can I share my idea with Yahoo, and get paid for it?

If I shared my idea with them, what would stop them from saying, “We’ve already thought of that and just hadn’t implemented it yet”?

I could take my idea and turn it into a website on its own, and it would get some traffic; but nothing like what it would get if it was right there on the Yahoo homepage. Plus, this is the kind of site, similar to Answers, that gets better and better as more people get involved; which would happen very slowly if I tried to establish it as a website on its own.

Anybody have any ideas of how I could approach Yahoo with this idea, and still make some kind of profit from it?

Larry McCann answers:

Go to college, major in web development, get a job with Yahoo… You’ll get paid for your ideas. Or try your 2nd thought, and create your own web page, get LOTS of advertisers, and put your idea into play. Sorry, but I think Yahoo! Knows how to get lots of hits on their pages.
