Creative new business ideas for a managment class?
I have to make a business plan for a made up business. I am stumped on what kind of business to start…. Any creative ideas? But it has to be something that will be somewhat realistic.

Larry McCann answers:
As you can see from the other responses it can be anything. What they are looking for is that you have been thorough.
No matter what business you need to look at the following:
Business Strategy, Location, competitive environment, marketing plan, budget, forecasted revenue, hiring plan, capital funding, legal issues, etc.
How about a business that does beauty salon treatments in your own home. Great for people who can’t get out (like seniors). You would hire stylists, and they would make a portion of the fee. You have very little overhead, except administration and advertising. You would cut deals with rehab centers, etc. To get lists of patients who are home bound and then set up appointments for people to go there and do their hair, nails etc. You refer the names to the mobile stylists, and they do the work. You collect the money and the stylist gets a percentage. No building, very flexible for the stylist, and you Can run this business right out of your home.
You would need to find out how much stylists pay to have a chair in a salon, and then how many clients they do a week, divide by the hours and make a comparison so they would see some benefit from doing this with you. Then keep going from there….
….Hey, maybe I should do this……

Sandra asks…
What do you think of these new business ideas? not looking to make a million…?
hi! i am a stay at home wife looking to start up my own business…i’m not looking to be a millionare, just my own boss.
what do you think of these ideas?
1. children’s party planning : i live in an area of wealthy people, they love throwing their kids parties…i love planning them…
2. “green” cleaning….non toxic cleaning services
3. “green” event planning

Larry McCann answers:
I think you could combine ideas 1 & 3, as both involve event planning. “Green” is very hot right now, so that could be good for marketing. If you do not exclusively focus on children’s party planning, but offer it as one of your specialties, that might work for you. I suggest that you do some market research before you invest any of your money in start-up. Your friends are going to do what friends do and be supportive and tell you it’s a good idea, but you really need to know if enough people are going to spend their money on what you are offering.
There are government programs aimed at people who want to start up their own businesses, as well as business development banks, etc. They often have packages to help with doing up a business plan. They have checklists to make sure you consider all the expenses and red tape, such as liability insurance, etc.
Good luck!

Any recommendations for books on coming up with new business ideas?
I have a strong desire to start my own business, and although I know exactly where my strengths lie, I don’t know what to do. Are there any books about which might help me put my thoughts together and come up with a quality business proposition?
I’ve been recommended a book named ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’, has anyone read this and is it any good?

Larry McCann answers:
Yes. Blue Ocean Strategy is a great read for starting to think with originality. But remember: ideas dont make businesses – markets make businesses. You could have the best idea in the world, but if no-one wants to buy it then you wont have a business.

Thomas asks…
What are some new hot business ideas?
Some new ideas that are doing fairly well, anything.

Larry McCann answers:
Something upper end if you live in the right area.
People are all into the classy things now without being too frugal.
It’s best to define a niche in a market rather than marketing towards a wide variety of people. You have to find that person to appeal to.
Maybe a 30 yr. Old upper class woman who works or is married. Sell beauti control or mason pearson hairbrushes or phyto hair products.
Or maybe you want to reach the average person. If there isn’t one near you already, I have seen people open up store fronts to sell avon or some such.
Maybe a message courier. Important companies may need to get documents somewhere quick.
Maybe even an internet cafe. There are none here. In the Czech Republic every corner has an internet cafe with computers.
