Great Questions Regarding New Business Ideas

William asks…

Creative new business ideas for a managment class?

I have to make a business plan for a made up business. I am stumped on what kind of business to start…. Any creative ideas? But it has to be something that will be somewhat realistic.

Larry McCann answers:

As you can see from the other responses it can be anything. What they are looking for is that you have been thorough.
No matter what business you need to look at the following:
Business Strategy, Location, competitive environment, marketing plan, budget, forecasted revenue, hiring plan, capital funding, legal issues, etc.

How about a business that does beauty salon treatments in your own home. Great for people who can’t get out (like seniors). You would hire stylists, and they would make a portion of the fee. You have very little overhead, except administration and advertising. You would cut deals with rehab centers, etc. To get lists of patients who are home bound and then set up appointments for people to go there and do their hair, nails etc. You refer the names to the mobile stylists, and they do the work. You collect the money and the stylist gets a percentage. No building, very flexible for the stylist, and you Can run this business right out of your home.
You would need to find out how much stylists pay to have a chair in a salon, and then how many clients they do a week, divide by the hours and make a comparison so they would see some benefit from doing this with you. Then keep going from there….

….Hey, maybe I should do this……

Lisa asks…

Anyone know of any new business ideas to service?

a business? that no one knows of yet?

like example a recruiter business that hires people for a business, ect.. but something that a business not already and a flooded service like a recruiting business thanks.

Larry McCann answers:

Selling frozen yogurt, cheap to start with big profit surprizingly

Sandra asks…

What do you think of these new business ideas? not looking to make a million…?

hi! i am a stay at home wife looking to start up my own business…i’m not looking to be a millionare, just my own boss.

what do you think of these ideas?

1. children’s party planning : i live in an area of wealthy people, they love throwing their kids parties…i love planning them…

2. “green” cleaning….non toxic cleaning services

3. “green” event planning

Larry McCann answers:

I think you could combine ideas 1 & 3, as both involve event planning. “Green” is very hot right now, so that could be good for marketing. If you do not exclusively focus on children’s party planning, but offer it as one of your specialties, that might work for you. I suggest that you do some market research before you invest any of your money in start-up. Your friends are going to do what friends do and be supportive and tell you it’s a good idea, but you really need to know if enough people are going to spend their money on what you are offering.

There are government programs aimed at people who want to start up their own businesses, as well as business development banks, etc. They often have packages to help with doing up a business plan. They have checklists to make sure you consider all the expenses and red tape, such as liability insurance, etc.

Good luck!

George asks…

Any recommendations for books on coming up with new business ideas?

I have a strong desire to start my own business, and although I know exactly where my strengths lie, I don’t know what to do. Are there any books about which might help me put my thoughts together and come up with a quality business proposition?

I’ve been recommended a book named ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’, has anyone read this and is it any good?

Larry McCann answers:

Yes. Blue Ocean Strategy is a great read for starting to think with originality. But remember: ideas dont make businesses – markets make businesses. You could have the best idea in the world, but if no-one wants to buy it then you wont have a business.

Thomas asks…

What are some new hot business ideas?

Some new ideas that are doing fairly well, anything.

Larry McCann answers:

Something upper end if you live in the right area.

People are all into the classy things now without being too frugal.

It’s best to define a niche in a market rather than marketing towards a wide variety of people. You have to find that person to appeal to.

Maybe a 30 yr. Old upper class woman who works or is married. Sell beauti control or mason pearson hairbrushes or phyto hair products.

Or maybe you want to reach the average person. If there isn’t one near you already, I have seen people open up store fronts to sell avon or some such.

Maybe a message courier. Important companies may need to get documents somewhere quick.

Maybe even an internet cafe. There are none here. In the Czech Republic every corner has an internet cafe with computers.

Marketing Questions About New Business Ideas

Michael asks…

Are there investment corporations that look for persons who have new business ideas?

Do investment firms look for businesses or for people with ideas for a new type of business that they could finance?

Larry McCann answers:

Not really. Venture capitalists want way more than an idea. At the very least, you should have a professional management team (not necessarily committed to the company full-time at present, but ready for such commitment should venture capital funding materialize), a prototype of your product/service and/or the results of a concept test, a patentability opinion from an experienced patent attorney (if applicable), and a business plan that can convincingly show how you and your team can create a multi-million dollar business in three to seven years.

Note also that most venture capitalists prefer to invest in large transactions (some start at $5 million, some even at $20 million). The implications are twofold. First, you should have a management team that has experience managing multi-million dollar projects. Second, you should be aiming to create a company that would be valued in tens or hundreds millions of dollars within a few years.

Sandy asks…

Who knows any good book about new business ideas?

Hi,

I lost my job and I really need new business ideas to do something with my life. I read a book two years ago, but I lost it.

Thank you!

Larry McCann answers:

The World Is Flat, this book will tell you some new idea about running a business in this globalization new world.

Mandy asks…

New Business Ideas? I am looking to start a new business but don’t know what to do. Any Ideas / suggestions…

I have done retail, car sales, etc forever. (I am 36). I have excellent credit, access to funds (upto $500,000), I am computer savvy, People close to me say I have the gift of the gab.
I am looking to start a new business but do not seem to know what I should do that would be profitable and fun.
Any ideas..

Larry McCann answers:

I have found the best type of business to start up is a home based business. You have the same income opportunity as a traditional business has, and you also have less over head to pay for each month. Most everything in your house, is part of your business, which becomes tax write offs. Your telephone, computer, heating, electricity, car etc. Less over head, less bills to pay out then a traditional business which means MORE profit. Home based businesses are also cheaper to start up then a traditional store front. Most only cost $500 to start. They’re also easier to maintain.

With the business experiences that I have had, the best type of home based business to have, I feel is collaborating with another business. In doing this, it lessens the stress factor that a traditional business has, yet you have the same income opportunity, no overhead, no buying and re-selling, no bills to pay. So everything you make, is basically a profit! That’s what we did quite a few years ago. We collaborated with the largest direct selling Telecommunications service provider in the world. They market in Local and Long Distance telephone services, Internet, video phones, digital phones, VOIP, Satellite TV as well as all the major cellular phone providers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Alltell, Nextell etc. We save people money on services that they already have and can introduce them to services that they don’t have. Everytime these people pay their bills, we make a percentage over and over again each month.
This business gave us the opportunity to be able to start up our non profit organization and have the monthly funding come in that was needed for our programs.

Joseph asks…

Does anybody know the name of the entrepreneurial blog that reviews new business ideas?

There was a blog that was featured in either Wired Magazine or Fast company that I would like to read but can’t recall the name of it. The blog is all about new business ideas from around the world. I believe it is based in Europe. The blog reviews the ideas and anlyzes them as start-ups and new business. The blog design is bright with a graphic in each post.

Larry McCann answers:

You will be a heck of a lot better off contacting your local Small Business Administration office (US Goverment) and asking for an appointment with the appropriate SCORE exec (retired successful business person) and also attending one of their afternoon seminars and letting other chew on your idea real-time.

Otherwise, your great idea will be passed only to their pals by the strangers who run the blog.
