Marketing Questions About Marketing Strategies

Chris asks…

What are some companies with good marketing strategies?

I have to do a presentation on a company with great marketing strategies, ie segmentation, product development, distribution, etc.

I wanted to do Apple but it was already taken, what are some others that would be a good example?

Larry McCann answers:

Think about companies that have been doing very well with their advertising efforts based on what you’ve seen…. Apple is certainly one of them. How about….

Geico – Although they’ve been launching a few interesting but funny campaigns at once (which usually isn’t the norm), they certainly have done very well.

Verizon – They’ve done very well within the past couple years.

Marketing Questions About Best New Business Ideas

George asks…

what is the best new business idea you have heard of recently?

Larry McCann answers:

If its a good idea why would anyone share it?

Helen asks…

what would be the best new business idea for modesto california?

Larry McCann answers:

It would be an old one. Find a freeway off-ramp that doesn’t have a Burger King and open one; preferably right next to a McDonald’s.

If your start-up capital is limited, come up with a personal service for all the people who commute to the Bay Area, have dual incomes and no time. Walk their dogs, deliver their dry cleaning, watch their kids after school . . .

Linda asks…

Any good business ideas for a teenager?

Does anyone have any good ideas of a business a teenager could start? I’m 15 and am willing to invest $3000. I’m open to all suggestions. Please don’t say babysitting. Me and kids don’t mix well.

Larry McCann answers:

Develop a product or service around your passion. What do you like to do? Where do you like to visit? What do like about your town, city, or community that you would like to showcase?

Before you conclude that this does not make sense, download and read this PDF document which will give you in detail (and better) what I am trying to describe here: http://mycps.sitesell.com/Dare.html

Paul asks…

What are good business ideas?

I need to find good business ideas to start my own business, not for real just a project. The idea can’t be those burger shops, shoe stores, and so on. Has to be a good idea in which people will buy a product or use a service. I can’t really think of anything because I always find negative advantages of that idea.

Please help! And no internet businesses unless it is clever and worth doing.

Larry McCann answers:

It is simple

write down a list of
- what you are good at
- what you care about

Eg, surfers start a clothing line of surf clothes (and make a lot of money) or a garderner starts a garden shop. Ummm….if you really care about burgers and can justify it, then why not start a burger shop (eg, suppose you know a place where lots of young people like to go on weekends, but there is no where to get a burger or a shake, then it would be a perfect idea)

Marketing Questions About Difference Between Punk

James asks…

What’s the difference between punk rock and alternative rock?

I know that alternative rock incorporated several elements from old-fashioned punk rock but other than that I still don’t see the difference between the two genres that much. Help clarify it for me, please.

Larry McCann answers:

Yikes, these answers are terrible! Punk music is hard to describe, because it is less of a music genre and more of a movement. Real punk focuses on DIY ethos, that is “do-it-yourself” and also think-for-yourself approach to everything. It is about independence, and rebellion against the inherent oppression of a forced social structure. Second, it does has a certain music style (the cliche “three chords and a drumbeat”) but that is besides the point. Notable punk bands include the following:
Crass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aen9I_JmdtI
Zounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8w14IaS8Us
X: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWunSUmEm4
Discharge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhoJj022nQk
Rudimentary Peni: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsuOeFiKoXo
Alternative is a little complicated, because it can be broken up into two parts:
(1) First, it as a condition that applies to music that is outside of mainstream (or, alternative to mainstream). However, bands that were once considered Alternative began to make it big (such as The Smiths and The Cure) and consequently made this term near obsolete. An Alternative band can not be mainstream, because (by contradiction) it would no longer be alternative. Therefore, plenty of punk bands can be considered Alternative, because no (real) punk band is mainstream.
(2) The second definition of Alternative has to do with sound. The ‘sound’ began around the time of post-punk, when bands were taking punk ethic and applying to new, artistic, and experimental music. Sooner or later, these bands could not be placed into any genre, so they were called “Alternative” from there on.
Notable Alternative rock bands include the following:
The Jesus and Mary Chain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noeTCf8PLuc
Sonic Youth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRi2epOS5SA
Joy Division: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PldpBJEn4vQ
REM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA57Pafq_NU
Pixies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3r-xMt9JmM
In conclusion, the difference between punk rock and Alternative rock depends on which definition of Alternative implied. Punk is (conditionally) an Alternative band because it is non-mainstream, but is not in the second, sound-relevant definition.
Hope that helps.

Helen asks…

What’s the difference between punk sub-genres?

I’m a bit confused. Every time I read a comment board for any given group/artist’s video, I see that people refer to each as a different genre. I saw something like cannibal core yesterday. That’s all well and fine, but How many could there be? It seems every band has it’s own (sub)genre! What are the differences between punk sub-genres??

Larry McCann answers:

The sub genres come under punk….the only one that is hotly debated is pop punk…..
It mostly just bullsh*t
such as hardcore which is now street punk…

Lizzie asks…

Isn’t it sad that no one knows the difference between punk and emo these days?

I was talking about The Sex Pistols and my the person I was talking to said “Oh that emo band?” What the fcuk?!!!!! Isn’t it sad how these nobody knows the difference between punk and emo?!

Larry McCann answers:

Dude i hate that!
I also hate how people are like
“oh i like punk! Especially fall out boy and my chemical romance!”
its like.
Dude.
No.

Donna asks…

What’s the difference between punk and a punk?

hmm when i think of punk i think of music, and you know like green hair. haha. or just you know crazy hair and the punk clothes. well u know… but then i’ll here people in gangs called o look a punk, when their not punk, but like stupid gangsta. so what’s the difference?

Larry McCann answers:

Punk means punk as a whole. As in, the music, lifestyle, etc. All non-physical. If a person was actually punk, they wouldn’t say they were, because the people who purposely try to be a punk fail miserably and are then classed as a poser.

Though because of the anarchy among punk-followers, calling someone a punk would usually just mean a rebel or a troublemaker, someone who wanders the streets or mucks around in class. Definitely not the real punk deal.
